Combined HAZOP Basic and Leaders
(3 days)

Overview

The aim of this course is to provide participants with an in depth understanding of the use of the Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) Study to provide them with the skills to participate effectively in a study as well as to lead successful Hazard and Operability studies for processing industries.

Throughout each course, over 55 years of in-house knowledge is shared with the course participants from highly respected and experienced course presenters.

Each presenter is frequently approved as HAZOP leaders for major developments as per some of our State legislators, for example, by the NSW Department of Planning.

The program is facilitated using a mixture of presentations and class discussion (as the awareness course is over 1-day only there are no team based practical exercises or case studies for the course – for such contents the participants are kindly directed to the Basic and Leaders HAZOP Courses which are presented by us).

The course is structured from a practical industrial perspective. The experience and background of the presenters ensure that the course is directly relevant to all participants.

Our presenters maintain close association with industry, government and universities which ensures that our courses reflect the latest in HAZOP thinking. For example, recent additions include key issues as embodied within AS 61882 (the HAZOP Application Guide), current Orica HAZOP and Hazard Study techniques, HAZOP study requirements with respect to Major Hazard Facility legislation and various unique processing and design examples where the HAZOP technique has been successfully applied.

The course has been presented to industry and government around the world for well over 30 years and form the pillars of Australian HAZOP study methodology today.

The course is run in-house only. If requested, the course can run in-house and be customised to meet your demands.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this course, participants will understand the background, benefits and requirements for HAZOP studies; how to take an active role in HAZOP studies so that studies can be planned and undertaken effectively and efficiently; and have sufficient understanding of and practice in the disciplines required for leading a HAZOP. They will also learn how to recognise the warning signs of a deficient study.

Who will benefit

HAZOP is a team process and can involve people at all levels of the organisation from shop floor to senior managers. The course is designed to satisfy all potential participants, including engineers, project managers, operators, maintenance technicians, safety, health and environmental personnel, chemists and process designers.

Course outline

The methodology presented is the leadership of the standard HAZOP methodology as described in the AS IEC 61882-2003 and the NSW Department of Planning HIPAP8 guidelines for HAZOP study (2011).

The course material includes both the HAZOP Basic Course and the HAZOP Leaders Course which have been combined as a three-day course.

  • The HAZOP Basic course covers continuous process operations as well as other HAZOP methodologies such as batch sequences (batch HAZOP studies) and procedural HAZOP studies. It also includes hazard studies in Projects and in management of change processes.

  • The HAZOP Leaders course covers HAZOP study team leadership (team interactions, potential pitfalls etc.); planning for effective HAZOP studies (including designing HAZOP guidewords); lessons from major incidents; as well as providing an overview of HAZOP study complementary techniques (fault tree, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, QRA).

There is a maximum of 15 participants on each course.
